Blogging, like life, brings many rewards. I have found that blogging rewards come in all shapes and forms like new friends, special honors and even sunshine.
Blogging has been another chapter in my writing life, a chapter that I have enjoyed. I have learned and I have grown, both as a writer and as a person. Writing has taught me to think deeper and use my words to (hopefully) cause others to think deeper.
I have learned a great deal about myself, as a women, a writer, a wife, a mother and a friend. I have also learned a lot about the technical side of writing and that, to me, is my least favorite. But with most wonderful things in life, there are also the not-so-wonderful aspects. And that is okay.
Since I began blogging, guest blogging and marketing my blog on Instagram, I have met some wonderful fellow-bloggers and have had fun getting to know them, learning from them and being inspired by them. I’m pleased to call some my friends.

I’m blessed to be part of this community of bloggers. All women, writing and wanting to be read, all women that have words to say and words to teach. These writers use their words to uplift, enlighten and inspire.
One of these writers was kind enough to think of me and honor me by nominating my blog (and me) for The Sunshine Blogger Award.
I was extremely honored when Stephanie of Citrus & Sun nominated me. I have enjoyed chatting with Stephanie and I have enjoyed learning more about her and her life in Chicago. Her blog is full of inspiration, insight, and gorgeous pictures and her words will touch your heart.
The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to bloggers, by other bloggers, who they feel are creative, positive and inspiring. So, being nominated by your peer is an honor. Once nominated, the blogger is to write a post in which they:
1. Thank the blogger who nominated them and link back to their blog.
2. Answer the 11 questions asked by the blogger who nominated them.
3. Nominate other blogs and give them 11 new questions to answer.
4. Notify the your nominees and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post.
This is the second time I have written a post like this, answering personal questions and asking other bloggers to play along. The first was the Blue Sky Tag Challenge. Read that post and those answers here.
And now, my answers to Stephanie’s questions:
1. What do you love most about blogging?
I love to write so blogging is perfect for me. It is my journal of thoughts. It’s about the places I have been, thoughts I want to share, lessons I have learned. My words come straight from the heart and straight from above, I pray for them and most of the time, He gives them to me freely.
2. How did you come up with the name of your blog?
I simply thought about the writings of Dedra Davis, so dedra davis writes seemed like a natural choice.
3. Who is your favorite musical artist/band of all time?
That’s a hard one. I love so many different bands, artists and genres. Growing up with older brothers, I learned to like The Stones, Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac. Being a teenager in the 80’s, well, you can imagine all the music there; I went to a lot of concerts with my friends but seeing The Stones in concert was probably the one I boast about the most. As an adult, more concerts, more music. Mark and I once saw Steve Werner around ten times within two years. My daughters have introduced me to many of my recent favorites and I am proud to say Ed Sheeran might just be my all-time favorite. Besides meeting him over four years ago, we have seen him in concert four times. He is awesome!
4. Describe one of your favorite memories.
I’m blessed with some amazing friends and family and many amazingly fun times, with those friends and family, traveling, laughing, and living life. This is also a hard question because of this blessed life I lead. I don’t think I could come up with just one. Of course, there is the wedding day, each of my three children’s births and the day I met my husband.
5. What is your favorite place you have traveled to or visited?
Mark and I have traveled a lot in our thirty years and I can’t pinpoint one city or trip. (I have a hard time picking one of anything, don’t I?) I probably would say London. But there’s also San Francisco, New York City, Paris and so many more. And, we just returned from Boulder and Denver and that would be on the list of many, also!
6. If you could have a conversation with anyone, living or not, who would it be and why?
I think I would pick my Grandmother. Years before she died, I started having a real relationship with her through one-on-one visits, letters and phone calls. She was such a sweetheart and I loved her so much. When she laughed, she lit up the room. She was a strong God-fearing woman and a simple, hard-working lady who loved her four children and many, many grandchildren. I only wish I would have had this closeness with my other grandparents as an adult. I think all too often, we don’t take advantage of these relationships with our grandparents, as adults. And before you know it, it is too late.
7. What inspires you?
Nature inspires me so often. I love to see the beauty in my surroundings. Is this something you acquire as you age? Not sure. I see beauty in the sky, (obviously) flowers and plants, landscaping and architecture, and water—rivers, lakes, the beach! Babbling brooks in Colorado!!
8. Describe your favorite space to work on your writing?
My office really makes me happy. And inspired to write. I like my desk and the window in my office. I love my pups laying in there with me. Here lately though, I really enjoy writing in my sunroom. I have a couch, piled high with pillows, my pups sleeping beside me, a fan blowing on me and nothing but glass above. My sunroom inspires me. It is lovely on a rainy day, a cloudy day, but I really enjoy it on a bright-sunny-blue-sky kind of day.
9. What is your ideal way to spend a morning when you do not have to work?
I despise getting straight out of bed and into the shower. I am not a morning person. I’m not a grouch in the morning—I simply like a slow morning. Waking up, without an alarm clock, playing and loving on Charli and Martha, enjoying coffee outside and hanging in my pajamas, equals my perfect morning. Oh, and writing!
10. What is a movie that you could watch over and over again?
Same answer…so many. My list would include Christmas Vacation, Sabrina, Return to Me, The Jerk and Airplane, but there are many, many more!
11. What is your favorite blog post you’ve ever written and why? Show us the link!
Once again, I have a hard time picking just one. They are all important to me because they have come from within, from the heart. Even the posts about Waco. I would have to say one of my most favorite posts I have published would be the one titled Doors; opening and closing life’s doors
Thank you again, Stephanie. I appreciate the thought and I’m honored you choose me for this sweet award.
