Fall mums are a beautiful symbol of fall. With their rich colors that let you know autumn is here, or is on its way. Fall mums have colorful domes of blooms in the golden jewel-tone hews that look perfect on your porch, alongside your pumpkins or alone in your flowerbeds.
Fall’s favorite flower, otherwise known as chrysanthemums.
Per Wikipedia, Chrysanthemums, (pronounced /krɪˈsænθəməm/), are flowering plants of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae. Fall mums are native to Asia and northeastern Europe. Most species originate from East Asia and the center of diversity is in China.

I love to buy mums in the fall. I place them in pots all over–by my mailbox, front porch, front flowerbeds and on my back porch. They add so much to your outside fall décor. Alongside pumpkins or alone.
Nurseries and gardens centers look pretty all the time with all their plants and flowers, but in the fall, they make me especially happy. When I see all the rows of fall mums, in all their pre-bloomed glory, I know fall is coming.
In Texas, you can buy them too early. I usually do. It is a chance I take. I make sure to keep them moist by watering them thoroughly daily.

Garden mums come in a wide array of colors associated with autumn, including yellow, white, red, pink, and bronze. They even come in purple which looks great Halloween with your jack-o-lanterns!
My favorite is the golden-yellow!
I like to include some sweet potato vine alongside my fall mums and pumpkins, in the lime green or purple color. I think this looks as if the pumpkins are still on the vine. The sweet potato vine also blends wonderfully with the colors of the fall mums.

When you plant your mums, have plenty of well-draining soil, whether you plant in the ground or in a pot. Make sure to leave 6-12 inches between each plant, in flowerbeds. And, always water often.
They are thirsty little fellers.
Dubbed as THE Fall Flower, mums are most identified with the fall season even though they can bloom all year long.
Don’t forget to pinch off the dead bulbs. If you continue to do this, the mums will continue to bloom throughout the season and will continue to give you color.
Before freezing temperatures of winter hit, always protect your fall mums by covering the entire plant with several inches of mulch. In the spring, always cut back stems, and fertilize well to encourage blooms.
