In my adult life, I have only had three live Christmas trees. I love the beauty, the un-perfect look, and the smell of a live tree. However, I don’t love the clean up, fire hazard, or the stress of stringing the lights.
Having a faux tree is a convenience, for sure. No needles on the floor. Faux trees, or forever trees, are also more economical because you can re-use the tree, year after year. And, if you buy a pre-lit tree, you have the ease of the lights, the ease of no stress of stringing the lights.
O, Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum
There’s one thing missing though—the smell of Christmas. The smell of a live tree. The woodsy smell of pine, balsam, and spruce. You can’t get it with a faux tree–but you can fake it!
If you’re like me, you pine for the smell of a real tree and you wish your house smelled as if you hiked into the woods and chopped down your own fir-tree. There’s something magical about a fresh-cut tree. The smell takes you back. Back to your childhood, back to a tree lot, back to the forest. It’s clean, it’s fresh, it’s Christmas magic.

I decorate with Christmas trees all over my house but unfortunately, they are all faux trees. In fact, I decorate with nothing but Christmas trees, of all sizes and shapes.
So, how do I fake the smell of a freshly cut tree in my home?
Candles
I have found some fragrant candles this year that have that clean, winter, fir-tree smell. Candles are always my go-to when I want my house to smell inviting. I always have a candle burning. I not only enjoy the flicker, but the smell takes you away depending on the flavor.
My favorite Christmas fir candles are from Bath and Body Works, Target, and Capri Blue candles from Anthropologie.
- The Fresh Balsam candle from Bath and Body Works uses essential oils and smells of Woodland Balsam, Eucalyptus and Cedar-wood. I use the 3-wick candles and the Wallflower plug-ins to make my house smell like a Christmas tree lot. I love these candles because they smell-up your room. I hate spending money on candles, but you burn them and never smell them. Hate that!
- I also purchased some white pillar candles from the Hearth and Hand with Magnolia Home at Target. These are wonderfully fragrant. The Sugared Birch candles are a naturally woodsy scent with a dash of a sugar-sweet smell. Think of pine and sugar cookies. Think of Christmas! They won’t be at Target long, so I recommend you go get some now. You will thank me.
- Anthropologie sells a line of candles at Christmas, and all year, called Capri Blue. You can find Capri Blue candles in many places online and at small shops everywhere, but I think Anthropologie has the largest variety. The Fir and Firewood fragrance is my favorite at Christmas to fake the tree smell. They make it with apple, clove, fir, pine needle, white birch, cedar, vetiver, and musk. The green jar candle is gorgeous, too, and looks great placed anywhere in your home at Christmastime.

Non-candles
- I always buy a live wreath and hang it on my front door. I like the way the fresh fir smells as a guest waits for me to open the door. This year, I also hung a live wreath on my back door. Back door guests are always the best!
- Live greenery is also a beautiful way to fake the fresh smell of Christmas in your home. I buy a chunk of it at nurseries where they sell live trees. I cut it all up and place it throughout my home on shelves, my fireplace hearth, my dining room table, the bathrooms, and well, basically all over my home. I love the way the greenery looks and of course the way it smells. It is like I have brought the boughs inside my home.
- I also purchase Scentsicles. These are the smartest little things, designed to blend in when you hang the green, slim sticks on your tree. They come with an ornament holder and have different types of tree scents like White Winter Fir, Pine, Spruce, and many others. You can find these at all the big box stores.
- Essential oils are great to use, also, to fake the fresh evergreen smell. Using essential oils is a more natural, healthy way to smell-up your home. I recommend any of the evergreen oils like Balsam Fir, White fir, or Douglas fir. You can put the oils in a diffuser, put a few drops on ornaments or fresh pine cones, or make a room spray. You can also clean your home with the tree oils and not only have a fresh-smelling home but a disinfected one, too.
- And finally, there’s always a simmering pot on your stove. Place water in a pot and fill it with all kinds of fresh goodies—lemons, fresh pine or fir, cranberries, vanilla, and rosemary, or thyme. You can experiment with combinations that please your nose and your home. You can also put a few drops of tree essential oils in your simmering pot.
Now, for those three times in my adult life, I had a real tree…the first was when I was a senior in high school. I begged for a real tree over and over but my parents kept saying no. One day in early December, my dad came home, dragging a live tree through the front door. It was such a happy moment and I will always cherish it. Thank you, Dad!
The second time was when Mark and I were dating. We went together, picked our tree, bought lights and a few ornaments. We went back to my apartment and decorated it together. It was so fun, so romantic and I love the memory.
Our third and last live tree was our first Christmas together as a married couple. We took our cocker spaniel, Barney, with us. It was sweet and romantic. And then, Barney peed on a tree at the Christmas tree lot. We appreciated him trying to help, however, we did not pick the tree he picked!
I hope you find your fresh fir smell in your home, by having a real tree or by faking it with some of the ideas above. I have implemented these tricks in my artificial-Christmas-tree-home, this year, and I am loving the Christmas tree aroma. Ah, the smell of the evergreen conifer brings those Christmas feelings and that Christmas magic, doesn’t it?
love and blessings, dd
