With a new season upon us, and knowing spring is a rebirth, a new beginning, take some time to take it all in. Use your five senses to immerse yourself in everything new spring has to offer. Go outside and discover new things.
The promise of spring ensures new discoveries are waiting to delight all five of your senses. All you must do is let it happen.
Days are longer and brighter. Warmer and fresh, with the temperatures rising. It’s time to wake up and get outside!
Look at all the rebirth around you, from weeds that are as pretty as flowers to leaves budding on the trees. Even in the city, you can find spring.
Spring is a time to wake up, clean up, and lookup. And, Spring adds new life, new wonders, to all that is alive.
You have five senses for a reason—use them. Use them all. ‘Tis the season! Spring is the perfect time to get outside and explore all the world has to offer, even if that means your backyard. Or your neighborhood. Explore your surroundings, no matter how close to home or how far your exploration takes you.
Winter has us inside. Bundled up and pinned up like a hibernating bear. Spring is the time to stretch, to get our energy back, and to go outside.
Watching your world green-up will help you green up, as well. Your attitude and emotions will change and as well as your energy level.
Nature is a magical being. It is alive, and if you adventure out among, you will feel more alive, too. I dare you!
A sense is a physiological capacity of organisms that provides data for perception. Our five senses refer to how we, as humans, perceive the world around us. There are obviously good and bad perceptions. The five senses are smell, touch, sound, taste, and sight. (But that’s boring. We learned all that in grade school, right?)
Today, I am talking about using what God gave us to explore the world He gave us, and by using these five senses, we can enjoy the gift of spring.
Smell
Stop and smell those roses! Spring is full of wonderful smells—flowers, grass, rain, and so much more. Smell it up! Take a deep breath in, let it out. Breathe in and out through your nose and enjoy it. (Unless you have spring allergies, of course!)
“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.”
― Margaret Atwood, Bluebeard’s Egg
Touch
Feel. Yes, feel your way through spring. There are many objects during the spring season you should be touching. Seeds, flowers, plants. Caterpillars! Fuzzy, newborn animal babies, if you’re lucky. Green blades of grass and dirt. Get your hands dirty.
Put your hands in the dirt and dig! Plant something new, even if it is only a plant or herb for your home.
“It’s Spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.” -Rainer Maria Rilke
Sound
Listen, too. Use your ears to take in spring. Listen to the rebirth around you. The outside world is happy and all aflutter. Listen to the birds—the squirrels. Hear the rain coming down. Enjoy a nice thunderstorm. Listen to the music and sounds around you. The wind blowing in the trees, a wind chime moving among the wind. Children playing. Listen to nature around you, in your backyard, the park, while you’re taking a walk.
Taste
Taste spring. Buy some spring-fresh vegetables and prepare them for dinner—fennel, greens, artichokes, and asparagus. Grill them, roast them, eat them raw in a salad, or prepare them in a soup. Pick some berries. Discover new fruits you have never tried. Be brave and try a vegetable you were afraid of as a child. Have an adventure in your meals. And don’t forget about dessert.
Sight
And, of course, see the world around you. It is alive. It is new and fresh, and it is waiting for you.
Always be observant around you, and you will see beauty galore. There is beauty in everything, not just the intentionally beautiful things, but in everything. Open your eyes and appreciate it all.
Look up. The sky is a beautiful thing, from the bluest of blues to big, fat, puffy clouds. You need to see the beauty in a grey sky, as well. Spring showers bring dramatic skies.
Look down. The ground beneath you is ever-changing. It is full of all colors and all things beautiful. Plants are sprouting up and peeking into the world. Colors change from brown to green, and snow melts away and shows the earth again.
Change up the way you go to work, or school, or the grocery store. Find a new route. Discover a new path. There are so many places, and things, in your own town that perhaps you’ve never seen, or you just never noticed. Open up your eyes and take notice.
“Renewal requires opening yourself up to new ways of thinking and feeling.”
― Deborah Day, BE HAPPY NOW!
So, take your five senses for a walk, explore your city, go work in your yard, or take your dog to the dog park. Just get outside and use your senses to delight in spring!
Spring and autumn make me happy. In Texas, we only get these two seasons for a concise time, so we must act fast and take it in while we can. We can’t waste a day. Perhaps this is why I feel so empowered and enlightened with the new seasons. Giddy, I get giddy. I want you to feel this energy and excitement with me.
Last year, I wrote about how to put the spring back in your step. Can you tell I love spring?
I hope for you days of spring. Long, fresh, delightful days that cause you to smile. Cause you to dance. Happy spring!
