This is a pep talk to all the dreamers out there. Find your courage! No matter what you’re dreaming about. Find your courage and start doing, because dreams don’t have deadlines. And dreams don’t have wrinkles.
I tell my story again to inspire. Find your courage and start doing. Find your courage and start acting on it. You can wait as long as I did, or you can find your courage now.
“It’s a very excruciating life facing that blank piece of paper every day…” -Truman Capote
…but, once you get that idea, once you get that inspiration, you take to the keys and life begins again. Once you start typing, your inspiration turns into letters and words, and then the words turn into sentences and paragraphs. Your words come alive, and your inspiration is no longer just in your brain, but alive in the world.
The highs and lows of courage
I love the highs of writing. I love hitting publish, or submit, or send! I love being published and read. The highs for me are when people tell me that they felt my words and the words moved them.
The lows, or lulls, are not as fun. Blank screens, blank minds, and all the technical stuff. Not to mention mustering up the nerve to write an editor asking about a submission. It is easier not to do it, but that is the same as a no, right? I tell myself this all the time. But I wouldn’t change a thing, even the twenty-six years it took me to start writing professionally. Twenty-six years *after* graduating with a journalism degree.
Find your courage
So once again, I tell you, NO I scream to you—no matter how long it takes, it takes. Find your courage. No matter what your dream, you dream. No matter what you wanna do, DO!! If I did, if I do, so can you! Believe it!
You can use this inspiration for anything—going back to school, starting a business, writing a book, asking for a promotion–anything that requires you to be brave. Anything–that requires courage. Find it–find your courage!

I call myself a late-in life writer because I found my words, I found my courage, my courage to put those words out into the world, and the confidence to allow those words to be read. I found this courage only four and a half years ago.
Late-in-life because I graduated in 1988 with a journalism degree. I was 48 when I started writing professionally. THAT is late-in-life. But, dreams don’t have deadlines! And dreams don’t have wrinkles.
In my writing, on my blog, or anywhere my work is published, I like to inspire people to be the best they can be, to look deep within, to laugh. I love to make people think and to remind them they are enough. I like to remind them they already have what it takes. I also love to inspire people to live their dream. Because if I can, anyone can.
I write for myself. I write for my readers.
I write for my family. I hope I make them proud. I hope I show them they can dream and they can make their dreams come true with a little courage. I hope they see my bravery. I hope they see it took a lot to get started and it takes a lot of courage every time I put myself out into the world, with my words.
I want to give others a nudge to do what they love. And to love what they do. And in the middle of all that—love yourself because that is so important.

Dreams don’t have deadlines
Having the courage to send my words out into the world, for people to read, and for people to criticize, or to deny, is important to me. It’s crucial. I didn’t have the courage for so many years.
When I first started writing, I went to work for a small newspaper in the Waco area. I was finally writing professionally, receiving a paycheck and in love with this dream-come-true. Seeing my name in print was like a child walking into a candy store.
I was giddy. It felt like a lifetime to get to that point, and it was, it actually was a lifetime—48 years. I enjoy every moment of my new life. I feel like I am more me than I have ever been. I still feel like I am playing when I write. Pure joy.
Almost.
When I was writing for the Waco paper, I was still getting my confidence legs (like sea legs!), but because I am a bit of an introverted-extrovert, interviews were difficult for me. I mean, it took courage. A lot of courage. I had to talk myself out of the car. And into the meeting.
I interviewed people like the spokesman for the Waco police, the sheriff of our county and Joanna Gaines.
Yes, you read that right. JoJo. (read about that here. It is one of my very first blog posts!)
All that took courage.
And having that courage was so new to me. It was slippery, but I could not allow myself to slip back into the courage-less hole.
“Courage is hard, but once you jump, it feels so great. And once you land, there’s nothin quite like the feeling of that self-power.” dedra davis
Dreams don’t have wrinkles
This late-in-life writer is happy with who she has become. And I am proud of myself. And my story—my why, my how, and my how long. I still need more confidence because I have more dreams. And like I said—dreams don’t have deadlines. Or wrinkles.
Dreams have dreamers who become doers.
I tell my story again to inspire. Find your courage and start doing.
