The world really is your oyster when it comes to traveling. Preparing for a trip to Spain, or to any destination, is part of the excitement of traveling.
Mark and I spent the last year preparing for such a trip to Spain and Greece. We researched and dreamed. We dreamed and looked at pictures of hotels and where we wanted to stay in Spain. We booked the trip and celebrated. And continued the dreaming.
Sometimes life invades your dreams.
The bad news is Mark discovered he has cancer. The good news is he is healthy now, and although we had to cancel our trip to Spain, our dreams can now continue.
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust
In the process of planning and dreaming for our vacation, we learned a lot and what we learned will help us when we resume the planning to adventure around Spain.
What we learned
Certain tourist hotspots tend to be increasingly advertised by travel agencies, and this can have a significant impact on where we decide to go when we have time are planning a trip and want to go abroad. But it’s important that you look at all of the different options available to you when it comes to heading overseas.
This will help you to know what’s on the menu and that you choose the best place to suit your needs and preferences. If you have chosen Spain as your country of choice, here are a few different things that you should do in advance of boarding your flight in order to prepare for your getaway!
Learning the Lingo
If you only speak English, or if you are not familiar with language of a country you are visiting before you head there, it is always both polite and logical to pick up a few basic phrases or words.
It is polite, as being able to casually converse with someone in their language shows that you are trying to accustom yourself to the place that you are visiting. It is logical, as not everyone happens to speak English, and you may find yourself in a whole host of situations where you need to communicate with someone to purchase something, find your way from one place to another, or ask for help. (This happened to us in Paris!)
The main language of Spain is, rather unsurprisingly, Spanish. I had Spanish in high school and Mark speaks a few words, also. But neither of us are by any means fluent.
So, consider taking lessons in advance of arriving in the country. You can figure out how to find the best online language course to suit your needs through Spanishbananza.com. For now, here are just a few basics to memorize.
- Hola – hello
- ¿Habla inglés? – do you speak English?
- ¿Cuánto cuesta? – how much does it cost?
- ¿Qué hora es? – what time is it?
- ¿Tarjeta de credito? – do you take credit card?
- La cuenta – the check/bill
Things to Do
Spain is a relatively large European country, so there are plenty of different destinations within its borders that you could consider. Here are a few activities, attractions, and events that some have to offer, so you can start making plans in advance.
Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit. Frank Borman
Barcelona
Barcelona is a cultural hub of activity. I love big cities, so Barcelona is on the top of my wish list of places to see. If you’re interested in museums and art, this is the place to go.
I plan on seeing as much as I can. On my list of sites are the Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell. These are designed by famed architect Antoni Gaudí and are supposed to be incredible. For sure a must-see! I also plan on exploring La Rambla, which is filled with shopping, cafes, restaurants, and street performers.
Asturias
If you’re seeking a beach getaway, you might prefer to head to the coastal town of Asturias. This area boasts stunning scenery, rocky coves, and some of the most alluring beaches in the whole of Spain. It also has immediate access to the mountains, if you’re interested in hiking!
As you can see, Spain has so much to offer. It’s a good idea to prep and plan what you’re doing and how you’re going to communicate with people well in advance of actually getting to your destination. Use the above steps to help you achieve this!
