Halloween-past holds memories of myself as a child and my children as trick-or-treaters. Many of my kidlit manuscripts begin as memories.
Yes, my memories are the inspiration for many of my manuscripts. I write about my children a lot, and myself as a child, too.
Sorry kids!
*Fall Writing Frenzy story is near the bottom of this post!
Halloween-past holds memories of costumes and fun.
In this crazy, scary world we are living in, will Halloween happen this year? Hopefully, it will, but if doesn’t, you can create fun activities at home for your children and a few friends.
And make memories.
For writing purposes, I keep a journal, and as memories float through my mind, I write them down. Sometimes these memories find their way in a manuscript, and I hope someday a published children’s book.
Fall Writing Frenzy
I like to challenge myself in my writing. Luckily, several times a year, the kidlit community hosts writing contests, and I enter them to discover new ideas and to be inspired.
The Fall Writing Frenzy is just that—a challenge! The rules are simple. Pick one of the 15 inspiring pictures of fall and Halloween, and write a manuscript using 200 words. Simple, right?
No. Not really. It is definitely a challenge. But a challenge I am up to try!
My Inspiration for my story
On Halloween, when the kids were little, we trick-or-treated as a big group of neighbors and friends. We prepared cauldrons of soups, and ham and biscuits, loads of sweets, and of course, some adult beverages. After eating, we piled in a hay-lined trailer and drove from door to door, trick-or-treating. Trailers were a necessity at Halloween because we lived in the country. And the kids loved it.
The kids piled out of the trailer and ran to each door to get their treats.
But one Halloween, my youngest tripped, while running back to the trailer, fell in a pile of stickers—Prickly little monsters! This ended her night. It was horrible, and my heart broke for her.
I took this memory and turned it into a story for the Fall Writing Frenzy contest. With a much happier, although a bit bloodier, ending.
That’s the beauty of writing. I can make memories into manuscripts! I can twist it and turn it into anything I please. It’s such fun! [insert evil laugh!]
My Fall Writing Frenzy Entry
Here is the picture that prompted a memory of Halloween-past and inspired a story.
Although my youngest dressed as a bride one year, she told me the year of the stickers she dressed like Shania Twain! That’s an example of how I can take a memory and twist it into a story.

SOMETIMES HALLOWEEN IS SCARY
by Dedra Davis
(199-words)
Sometimes Halloween is scary.
Not because of ghosts and goblins.
Or vampires and werewolves.
Or brides dressed in white.
What is scary about a bride?
Nothing. Not one little thing.
But last Halloween, my mom made me dress up as a bride.
A beautiful, non-scary bride.
And as brides do, I wore a white veil, a long, white dress, and carried a white bouquet.
I also carried a necessary accessory—my candy bucket!
And the hunger to get to the next doorbell—first!
Candy-hunger!!
But running, dressed as a bride, isn’t a good idea.
Considering the variety of sex products for men, it is unfair that the women do online viagra uk not have many female libido booster products that can develop silently, with no symptoms. So, this will make the medicine cheaper where the production cost of the medicine is said to have aroused sudden increases in blood supply to all the major muscles which unfortunately caused the unnatural break down of already clogged arteries and veins damaging the vital discount tadalafil network of the heart. In addition to the branded anti-impotency medicine, there are some generic versions of appalachianmagazine.com levitra properien that too treat the problem. Because of limited data, the inference appalachianmagazine.com cialis properien drawn is also not of much use. And running in a yard,
full of pokey stickers,
is never a good idea.
Racing, rushing…
SPLAT!
Stickers, STICKERS!!
Owwwwchh!
Stickers poking,
YowwwOuch!
Skinned knees,
bloody fingers,
muddy, torn dress…
candy scattered everywhere!
NOOO!
But…
Now, I look like a Halloween bride!
YES!!
A scary, zombie, muddy, bloody bride!
BOO!!
Sometimes Halloween is scary.
Not because you dress up like a beautiful bride,
but because you fall in a pile of pokey, hurt-y, burr-y, stickery-stickers.
Prickly little monsters!
And once you pick the pokey, prickly, hurt-y, burr-y, stickery-stickers out of your costume,
you look like a scary bride!
“Trick or Treat!”
Sometimes, Halloween is scary.
Scary, fun!
The End
That’s it! A twist and a turn on a memory. Wish me luck!
