#50PreciousWords Writing Contest and More

Getting published entails a lot of writing, revising, learning, and a lot of patience. Also, entering writing contests like #50PreciousWords.

Entering writing contests pushes me to create more manuscripts. Most writing contests have rules and limitations on word count to teach you to write a story arc in fewer words because picture books are usually 500 words or less.

Many think writing picture books must be easy because of the low word count. I learned quickly this is not true.

I take classes, webinars, attend conferences, read blogs and many picture books, to learn the craft. It’s an art. And speaking of art, the illustrations tell half of the story, so the author must leave room for that story as well.

Since 2016, author Vivian Kirkfield hosts a writing contest called #50PreciousWords. I entered her writing contest for the last two years. The rules are simple: write a children’s story with 50 words or less.

Finding joy in 2021

I’m excited about this year. I’ve already had some exciting writing moments, and hopefully, 2021 will be tremendously better than 2020. I pray so. Who am I kidding? It has to be!

And my son got engaged to his beautiful Sam. As a family, we are ecstatic!

Yes, 2021 will be better. Our family lost too much in 2020, so finding joy is important.
