There is one easy rule for simple decorating. Decorating your home can be as simple as using one neutral color. I finally figured this out, and my house has never looked better. Or happier.
I realized a few years ago, the secret to decorating your home well is all about simplicity in color. Know I am NOT a decorator, but I do love to decorate my home. I love to make it look beautiful, even if only for my eyes.
Simple decorating is my philosophy. Home decorating is simple—you need to enjoy your home, and it’s décor. You need to pass by a room in your house and smile, and if your décor doesn’t cause a smile, or cause a pause of admiration, you most likely are not enjoying your décor.
My house does make me smile. I am so happy here, and I enjoy being home because of this. It is comfy, cozy, and looks lived-in. Simple decorating. And, I hope it is inviting.
How did I get my home décor smile-worthy?
I stumbled upon my secret. No one told me this, so I want to share it with you.
Are you ready for the easy rule to effortless decorating?
Pick one color and stick to it throughout your home.
Yep, that is my secret. That is my one rule to simple decorating. It’s easy and it is simple. You may be doing this and not even aware. Or, you are saying duh.
I used to decorate with red. Still adore red, but now I use a neutral color—grey. I have grey in every room of my house. Even my walls have a muted shade of grey. It makes it so easy to move things around from room to room. I can refresh my bedroom by shopping from another room. This way I can switch up the sunroom and livingroom. Easy and simple decorating!
I use grey throughout my home, and I love it. It is neutral, basic, and goes with every other color, every season, and is so easy to refresh and change things up.
And like all colors, grey has many shades and hues; this leads to a variety of color and dimension.
From season to season
I have a grey couch. I use pillows and blankets to add color and to let the grey be king. The décor centers around grey, no matter what time of year it might be.
In winter, I add more warm colors, mainly reds. Reds and greens take center stage at Christmas and grey doesn’t mind one bit. During the fall, I add oranges, reds, and tans. Pumpkins look great against a grey background. In the spring. I also add more green (plants), florals, and cool colors. All the soft colors of spring look beautiful with grey.
And now that summer is here, I want to cool things way down, and like all the other seasons, I do this easily by adding different blankets, pillows, candles, and plants.
And white.

My daughter says every time she comes over; my house gets more white. Is white my next neutral color?
This summer, I am adding lots of lightweight white blankets. I find inexpensive, soft, creamy white throws at Target. They are thrown on every chair and the sofa. It adds such coolness and freshness to the room. If I want color, I add fresh flowers or a pop of color in a pillow. In July, I will add stars and stripes, and again-my friend grey will not mind at all.
“Cozy isn’t a style; it’s a tool”- Myquillyn Smith
I love how neutral grey and white are. Simple decorating. Nothing fussy, here. Just lots of comfort.
Speaking of pillows, I also add lots of white and cream pillows. H&M, Target has inexpensive varieties. And, when I want something exceptional, I purchase hand-sewn French linen pillows from Studio Pillows.
I add lots of clean, light-scented candles. An easy way to add décor is by adding candles. I use candles housed in clear glass, grey, or white. Candles are always lit at my house and are my must-haves.
“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”
White and grey feel light to me. These colors feel cool. And I need that on a hot, Texas summer day. When I am writing on the couch, I have a fan blaring on me and a blanket close by to cover up if I get chilled.
Other natural ways to brighten your room is by adding mirrors, glassware, and open those windows! Let that natural light shine throughout your house!
So, the basic rule I follow is to pick a neutral color and use it throughout your home, in every room. Add elements like blankets, pillows, candles, and greenery to make it comfy, cozy, and dreamy. Not fussy, dreamy. Lived in, loved in, dreamy.
Simple decorating is my philosophy. Home decorating is simple—you need to enjoy your home, and it’s décor. Your home should make you smile.Click To TweetThis rule makes it easy to add to your décor, piece by piece, room by room, slowly, if needed. Start with your couch. Add items and continue until your room causes you to smile.
I hope for you smiles when you look at your home décor. Your home should be the place that gives you the most comfort. And smiles.
