Leave your comfort zone, stretch yourself, and become the person you know you can be. Find the courage to find a new comfort zone, and sit there for a bit.
I have written about comfort zones many times. I try to stretch mine. But, I shrink back, deep within myself at times. Thankfully, when I know how important it is, to further my writing career, I stretch back to the uncomfortable. I can’t get where I want to be sitting on my couch in my home.
Yes, it is comfortable here. It is a lovely place to be. But, if I want to be published, I need to stretch. And I want to be published!
“The comfort zone is a psychological state in which one feels familiar, safe, at ease, and secure. You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone.”
― Roy T. Bennett
Too long on the comfy couch
I spent many years sitting in my comfort. I was too scared to write, to share my words. And, I won’t go back to that comfy couch. And just as I know I won’t sit there ever again; I also know that I must continue to grow. To stretch and become uncomfortable yet again, to continue to find a new couch to sit in my comfort.
Do you need to stretch yourself out of your comfort zone?
The truth–as scary as it is to me, is I know when I stretch out, I will find my new comfort zone. My new couch, if you will.

Sure your old piece of furniture is comfortable. It is lived in. But, if you buy a new couch, you still get comfort, but also beauty and your living room will change for the good. Once you get comfortable in the new space, you won’t miss the old, comfy sofa. You will be happy you stretched and tried something new.
“It’s not about getting out of your comfort zone to reach your goal. It’s about widening your comfort zone so far that your goal fits comfortably inside.”
― Richie Norton
Leaving the comfort zone
So, I am leaving for Austin, on Friday, and checking in a hotel by myself, and doing something new and scary. But, so exciting. I am attending my first writing conference. Talk about leaving my comfort zone. I am leaving my comfy couch(and husband and dogs!) and going to sit on a prickly chair.(the conference)And, I have all the feels about it.
I have two choices—stay comfortable, or stretch into an area that will have me antsy, sweaty, and shaky. I will have butterflies a’flying.
When I am at the conference, I can sit in the corner or I can put myself out there and meet people, who can help me in my publishing journal. That is enough to fuel me.
Two choices. And as I see it, I really only have one, so that is what I will do-get off the comfy couch!

You must make real change and stretch yourself. And to do that, you need courage and a goal. My goal is to be published.
I will have the courage to say hello. Courage to meet new friends and to meet friends I have been talking with on social media. I will have the confidence and courage to pass out my new writer’s cards. And, I will listen and learn—and I will grow.
And, I will stretch myself thin. I will gladly find comfort every night in the solitude of my hotel room where I can decompress and relax. Because getting out of your comfort zone is exhausting. Tiring, but oh so worth it.
My inner circle is my spot of comfort. My comfy couch, if you will. I love it here. I can be myself and not worry about what I do or say. Or, how I look.
But, it is time to grow. To stretch. It is time to let more people in and to introduce myself to like-minded people who write and edit and publish. And that excites me. It fuels me to leave my inner circle and my comfort zone. It gives me the courage I need to get up off this couch.

I am scared to death, but I am also so ecstatic and anxiously looking forward to this writing conference. The children’s book author in me will fuel me in uncomfortable moments. I could take the easy way out and not go, or I can be brave and courageous and grow! Stretch!
So, I choose to grow. How about you?
I hope for you a new place of comfort, a new courageous couch for you to sit on. Yes, I hope for you the courage to get out of your comfort zone!
love and blessings~dd

Good luck at your conference! A few weekends ago, I attended my first three day conference by myself! It was stressful and totally beyond my comfort zone. To make it through the weekend, I made sure to do things that were out of my comfort zone AND allow for things that helped me feel restored balance (like finding time to be alone in my room, rest, recover, etc). It was the balance that helped me make it through the weekend and feel like it was a success! You can do it!

Thank you! I will definitely be retreating to my room to decompress. That will be needed. I will be mentally exhausted. It is funny because I am equally excited and terrified. I know it will be good for my career and publishing venture. Thank you so much for reading and for the tips! I really appreciate it!
