Being thankful daily is an important mile on the road to happiness and feeling at peace. Without gratitude, you can end up lost in your journey.
I have written about being thankful and being grateful several times before, but it is on my heart again, so here I am writing my heart’s words.
‘Tis the season to be thankful, but we need to practice this fine art daily. Every day throughout the year, we should find ways to be thankful for what we have and learn to be content and happy. Not just in November.
I am thankful, daily, for the people in my life who support and love us along this journey called life.
Being thankful comes easily to me. It is a practice I learned years ago, and I believe it has made me a happier person. I do need to work on being content; here, I am a work in progress.
Gratitude incorporates both the heart and mind, and instantly paves the shortest road to happiness.” -Alan Cohen
But, it is easy for me to find joy and positive things in my life. No matter what is happening along this life’s road, I can find the good. Having so much to be thankful for, and knowing it, is a blessing in itself.
And, it is what makes you truly happy.
Giving thanks, where thanks are needed, is as important as giving.
This time of year we think about the ones we love and who we are thankful for and to whom we should thank.
Last year’s bumpy road
I am planning on enjoying my holidays a little more this year, and being even more thankful still.
Last year, starting in October, we had a grey cloud over us while Mark was in the process of getting a diagnosis of cancer. From October to the day after Christmas, (the day we heard the c-word, and sadly, also our son’s birthday), Mark had doctor’s appointments and testing. With every next phase, it was more important to look to our blessings.
Our family prayed it wasn’t true throughout the long holiday season.
After learning it was, we prayed for recovery and recovered health. And then, blessed with both.
So this year, our Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as our son’s birthday, will be sweeter. Yes, we went through a horrible mile or two, but our journey together is continuing. And for that, I am extremely grateful.
Back on the road
I believe you must drive through the storm to fully enjoy the journey. Bumps and uncontrollable stops along your way only make getting back on the road sweeter. More lovely and more blessed.
It is after the storm you see the rainbow, and it is only after the treacherous road conditions that you are thankful for the smooth miles.
Many people have journals and grateful jars, I have these as well, but my list goes up in prayer. I have a daily prayer of thanksgiving full of all my thankful’s and grateful‘ s.
Saying the things out loud that you are grateful for, or writing them down, brings them to mind more and helps you realize all the blessings you already have in your life. You become less “pitiful me” and more “look at blessed me.”
Here are some easy ways to remember to be thankful and to put thanksgiving at the top of your daily activities.
- Pray for others. There is always someone who needs your thoughts and prayers.
- Daily affirmations. Say the good, the positive things about yourself—daily. Make it a ritual.
- Write in a journal, daily, listing something, or many things for which you are thankful.
- Keep a prayer jar. Again, write it down.
- Every day, write in your planner and list what you are thankful for in your life.
- Call the one whom you are thankful for and let them know.
- Send snail mail to those on your thankful list.

She also wrote a blog this week about giving thanks every day. I hope you will read her blog-Thankfulness in all things.
