When its cold outside, and spring is still weeks away, home décor can lift your spirits and put a spring in your step. Pre-spring décor can brighten more than just your room.
Today is a dreary day. It’s cold, winter-looking out and a bit cloudy. I am in the mood to rearrange and shop my house for new-ish décor, but the weather is not lending to spring decorating. Perhaps it is because it is not time.

But, it is a great time to add pre-spring décor to your home.
I am ready for March, for more than one reason, but I try not to rush time so instead, I will get my house ready for spring, without rushing it. Pre-spring décor.
There is a great way to segway into spring without jumping the gun. I don’t decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving, so it only makes sense to wait on spring décor.
But, by adding a few flowers to your home décor you can brighten your room and your mood, without going all-out-spring. This takes the dreary depression out of winter. Bringing the indoors in, just slightly, can cheer you up and cause the winter blues to lighten. And brighten.
It is not time to get the bunnies and nests out, but you can ease into spring–gently and slowly.
As nature eases into the next season, so can you.
”Oh the long and dreary Winter! Oh the cold and cruel Winter!” -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I love to decorate my home around holidays and seasons. Fall and Christmas being my favorite. Spring is right there, too.
So how do you decorate in the dreary period between the New Year and the beginning of March?
First, you must know, I leave fir trees up in January. I have a winter wonderland in my home. I leave some twinkle lights and lots of non-lit trees. I take anything and everything Christmas down, but leave the winter.
Around the middle of February, I am ready to de-winter the house. I start removing the fir trees slowly in February. Usually after Valentine’s Day, I am ready to remove them completely.
I start taking out my winter plaids and heavier blankets. I try to lighten and brighten the room by removing the darker winter colors and adding more creams and whites.
Remember you can change the season and feel of your house slowly to mimic nature’s speed.
Take away green and add more in.
As I begin taking down the fir-trees and winter plaids, I add more greenery to my decor. As I take Christmas down, I add greenery and continue doing so. I add live plants and faux. I like both.
You could say I am a crazy plant lady.
I have many live plants, especially in my sunroom. I love the way they freshen a room. They are also healthy for you and your house.
Not to mention, they make me happy.
I add faux greenery to areas of my home that are a bit darker and don’t get as much sun.
One of my favorite places to buy faux plants is at Michaels Stores. You can find good quality faux plants for not a lot money. Use this link for a discount! 40% OFF Any One Regular Price Item
*I list my favorite places to buy great looking, really-live-looking-faux here. (Two years ago, the color of the year from Pantone was the best color they have picked. It was green and that is the perfect way to freshen your home.)
Another way I like to pre-spring is to add fresh and faux flowers.
“In winter, I plot and plan. In spring, I move.” -Henry Rollins
Life is a flower.
Fresh flowers from your grocery store, or a really good faux, is a wonderful way to segway into spring. Sure, tulips scream spring. But you can use tulips for pre-spring décor. Mimic what you see in nature. My tulips are coming up outside, so I can have their pop of color inside, as well. I add a lot of faux tulips in late January.
My favorite faux tulip is found at Magnolia Market. They have beautiful, real-looking ones in the spring.
Fresh flowers are also in my pre-spring décor. I always have fresh flowers in my home. This is highly recommended. When I go to the grocery store, I always buy fresh flowers for myself. You can get a bouquet for as little as $4. I don’t buy roses, instead I buy daisies, mums and other flowers from the $4 dollar bin. Occasionally, I do splurge when I see tulips, peonies and ranunculus!
“The earth laughs in flowers.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
I enjoy this time of the year because this is the most minimalist I get. Seriously, I have tried to minimal-down. But I fail. I like my stuff and I love plants too much.
So, until March gets here, I will pre-spring my house. A lighter version of spring and a lighter, brighter version of winter.

And, I hope for you some pre-spring décor.
