Traveling is part of our marriage just like trust and love. We love to plan, and we love to go. Part of the planning involves researching travel tips.
Everyone can benefit from traveling tips, no matter how experienced a traveler you are, right? We love to travel. We enjoy seeing new places and exploring new cities. We traveled three times in our first year of marriage and we haven’t slowed down yet.
But, we still have a lot to learn. Travel tips are helpful to every type of traveler.
What kind of traveler are you?
I am an over-packer because I want to prepare for anything. I am an over-thinker, too. I am not “spur of the moment, jump in the car and go.” I must have everything in order at home. I must make sure my dogs are taken care of properly. And, I must pack.
There are people who are happy to throw caution to the wind, hop onto a plane with little more than a backpack, and stride across the world with little or no fear.
Then there are those of us who are worried about every little thing that may or may not happen, refuse to let go of our overstuffed bags at the airport (I packed with everything ‘just in case’).
And sadly, there are people who decide not to travel anywhere at all because fear has gotten the better of them. This is the nervous traveler.
Happy to not be that last person–a nervous traveler. But, I would like to be a bit more like the second type.

I love to travel so I am not a nervous traveler. I consider myself a prepared traveler. What about you?
Are you a free-bird, unafraid of the challenges that may beset you, or do you limit yourself in what you do or where you travel, afraid to push limits?
If the latter is true to you, then here are some traveling tips to give you the courage to step out of your comfort zone. Here are some useful tips for those of you who identify with the nervous traveler.
Research where you want to go.
The more you know about a place, the less nervous you will be. Speak to a travel agent, pick up a few travel guides, and scour the internet for information on your destination of choice. Google and Pinterest are great travel resources. You can find articles on every city and country imaginable.
Safety a huge concern? Find out where the embassy is, if you leave the country. Map a course to the nearest health center. Look at the best places to eat and drink. (this is my kind of research!) And find a hotel that is suitable for all your needs, in an area you want to be in. Nervous travelers probably need to play it safe with the destination.
Wherever you go, go with all your heart. Confucius
Some places are safer than others, too, so to alleviate many of your worries, you may want to consider some of these destinations when looking through your travel brochures.
Take precautions.
And, when I say take precautions, I mean take those items with you that will give you peace of mind. I do. I don’t bring a first-aid kit, but I do bring band aids, first aid cream, and bug-bite cream. Just in casers.
To make the nervous traveler more comfortable, a travel first-aid kit can fit neatly into your carryon; perfect for any medications you need, or for any kind of health emergency.
We also use a frequent flyer credit card that doubles as insurance to cover for flight delays, lost luggage, or medical coverage. We favor the Amex platinum edge credit card. The miles are nice, too. Those points can add up if you go a lot!
Don’t forget all the benefits of your smartphone. My iPhone has my life in it. It offers you great security, as you can easily take photos of your travel documents and save them onto your device, as well as download any travel apps or articles that will make your journey easier.

Make a packing list.
I am a list-girl. I love a list, and I love to check items off my list. Nervous travelers might be worried about forgetting something vital. You can make a packing list; it’s as easy as that. (Of course, I usually forget at least one thing every trip!)
The sooner you make that list, the better, as you will have more time to gather what you need and have the items ready for the day of your departure.
If you do forget something, fret not! Aside from your passport and travel docs (which you shouldn’t forget), most items can be bought at the airport or at your destination you are visiting, so it’s not the end of the world if you forget your toothbrush or something you may need.

Don’t worry about being nervous.
Try to remember you are on vacation, on holiday. You are supposed to be relaxing, not worrying.
Don’t worry, be happy. You are traveling and living new experiences. Making memories. Know–you’re not the only nervous traveler in the world. Chances are there will be other people on your travels who feel the same, so don’t assume you’re the only one.
So, if you aren’t traveling with friends or family, strike up a conversation with people on the plane. Try and buddy up with people at the hotel. (Just be careful!) When you do feel alone, phone home as much as you need to. If you are nervous, contact with other people will settle some of your nerves.
Provided you have committed to research and have taken some precautions to alleviate your fears, you may find that your nerves drift away anyway. (And wine helps, too! Insert winking emoji with tongue sticking out!)
